名字と名前の順序 Order of the first name and the last name

行きつけの立ち飲み屋の店長さん・ウエイターさんとのスリーショットよ。お二人とも背が低くないのに、低く見えてしまってご免なさい。

日本政府は、政府文書に名前をローマ字表示する場合は、今後、日本人の氏名を現行の「名―姓」から「姓―名」の順へ変更・統一する方針を決めたって言うことが最近のニュースに出ていたわね。理由は、「グローバル社会が進み、人類の持つ文化言語の多様性を互いに意識することがますます重要になり、日本人の姓名のローマ字表記は日本の伝統に即した形にするのがいい」とのことだけど、この記事に私は驚いたわ。

文化言語の多様性を意識することとローマ字での名字と名前を今までとは逆にすることの関連性が理解できないのよ。そもそも、ローマ字表記は誰のためかと言うと、漢字の読めない外国人のためなのよね。こんな新たなルールを決めたら、外国の人々は目を白黒させ、混乱・誤解を生じるのではないかしら。「郷に入っては郷に従え」って諺があるけど、このケースでは、「アルファベット表記の世界と言う郷に入っては、その郷に従え」ってことになるわね。提案のルールをかの有名なJohn Lennonで例にとると、「John」は「first name」、「Lennon」は「last name」となっているのが逆転し、「first(最初)に来る名前」「last (最後) に来る名前」それぞれが反対になると言うおかしなことになるわよね。

この逆転表記は政府文書に限定しているらしいので、「どうぞご勝手に」って言えばいいのだけど、こんなことを考える時間があれば、国民の生活が良くなる政策にもっとエネルギーを使ってほしいわね。

 Gist of my today’s comment:  The Japanese government has announced that, valuing Japanese tradition, in Japanese names using alphabet letters, the order of “first name / last name” be reversed to follow the order of KANJI names.  At this moment, this is just a policy (idea) and the decision is yet to come after some considerations, and the policy is to be applied to government documents only.  Taking the name of John Lennon for instance, this rule demands that the first name of John be preceded by the last name of Lennon, that is to say, “Lennon John.”  I am afraid the idea, if implemented, may cause misunderstanding and bewilderment for the part of the forigners reading Japanese government documents.
