先日、コインパーキングに停めていた車を出すため精算機の場所に行ったら、老夫婦が精算できずに「立往生」していたのよ。何が問題なのか尋ねたら、6番駐車エリアの精算を行おうとしてもストッパーが解除できないと困っていたわ。車が停められていた「6番」のエリアに行ったら「9番」だったのよ。老夫婦は「9番」を逆に見て「6番」と思ったのよね。
確かに、「6」と「9」は180度転換して見ると同じ数字になるので、このような誤りが起こり得るわよね。「6」「9」それぞれの下にバーを施すことで対処しているケースが多いけど、それも、勘違い等で100％見間違いを防止することはできないわね。対応策として、「6六」「9九」とアラビア数字/漢数字を並記することにより、見間違いが防げると思うわ。
ほんの一例だけど、ちょっとしたアイデアで間違いを防げることが他にもたくさんあると思うわ。

A few weeks ago, I was involved in a trouble caused by an aged couple in a pay parking lot. They struggled to get their car out of their parking space numbered “6,” but in vain. I checked their car and the space number to find it was number 9. Numbers 6 and 9 are just the same if seen upside down.
After I left the place, a good idea occurred to me: in the space numbers 6 and 9, Arabic number and its corresponding Kanji number (“六” and ”九,” respectively) should be displayed side by side to prevent such an incident I have encountered this time.
I know this incident goes to show just an idea resolves a problem in a variety of situations.
