ほとんどの皆さんは、エレベータを毎日使っているのではないでしょうか。エレベータには、図形や文字を使用した、いろいろな開閉表示があるけど、時々どちらのボタンが「開く」なのか迷ってしまい、押し間違えを起こすことがあるのよね！（😭）特に押し間違えが多いボタンは下の図形よ（向かって右側の形が蝶々の羽を開いた状態をイメージさせ、開かなければならない時にうっかり押してしまうの（😭）。エレベータに乗ろうと人が入ってきた時、とっさに「開きボタン」と思って間違えて押し、その人がドアに挟まったら気まずい思いをしなければならないですよね！気まずい思いだけならまだしも、人を挟んだまま動き出す危険もあり、大事故に繋がるのよね（危）。
I know most of you use elevators every day. There are a variety of visual instructions to show “Open” and “Close”—graphics or letters—inside an elevator. I sometimes mistakenly take “Close” for “Open” in case of the instructions shown in the picture below! （😭） The instruction on the right looks like a fluttering butterfly giving an image to touch it to open the elevator doors, though it actually closes them. I feel sorry when I mistakenly touch the wrong instruction button in a hurried manner for a person just about to come inside, thereby being caught in the doors, you see! （😭） Feeling sorry is just one thing. There is a risk of tragedy when an elevator goes up or down with the door catching a person! （😭）
エレベータのように危険と隣り合わせの乗り物は、何よりも安全第一で、100人いれば100人全員が正しい操作を行うことができるようになっていなければダメよね。特にエレベータの開閉は、正しい判断を誰もが瞬時に行える表示が最重要項目だと思っているの。デザイン性などは、二の次、三の次よ！では、どんな表示が良いかって？それは、大人・子供・外国人すべてが瞬時に間違いなく押すことができる表示で、「ひらく・OPEN」「とじる・CLOSE」のように、「ひらかな」＋「英語」のダブル表示がベストではないかしら。これなら、誰でも瞬時に正しい操作を行うことができると思うの。
What comes first, above all things, is safety in any danger-involving moving machines including an elevator. Any person out of any 100 people using such a machine is expected to operate it correctly. Especially in opening and closing of elevator doors, the most important thing lies in the instruction button to properly lead anybody to quickly make a correct use of the sign. Instruction design does give priority to safety! What sign is welcomed? I think the best one is for all of adults, children, and foreigners being able to touch the instruction button in a quick and proper manner, just like a bilingual sign of “ひらく・OPEN” and “とじる・CLOSE.” I believe this sign makes anybody quickly make a correct use of the sign.
Note: Japanese words ひらくand とじる mean Open and Close, respectively.
